Google Maps can get you anywhere — by car, on foot, or by bus. Here's a step-by-step guide to using it with confidence.
Remember when you had to print directions before going somewhere new? Or pull out a folded paper map? Google Maps changed all of that — and once you learn it, you'll wonder how you ever managed without it.
What Google Maps Can Do
- ✓Give you step-by-step directions to any address
- ✓Show you real-time traffic so you can avoid jams
- ✓Tell you where to park near your destination
- ✓Find nearby restaurants, gas stations, pharmacies, or stores
- ✓Give you walking or public transit directions too
Getting Directions: Step by Step
1. Open the Google Maps app on your phone (it's a colorful map icon — red, blue, green, and yellow).
2. Tap the search bar at the top and type the address or the name of the place you're going. For example: "245 Oak Street Albany" or "CVS Pharmacy near me."
3. Tap the result that matches your destination.
4. Tap the blue "Directions" button.
5. Choose how you're traveling: driving (car icon), walking (person icon), or transit (bus icon).
6. Tap the blue "Start" button. The map will guide you with voice directions — it'll say things like "In 0.3 miles, turn right on Main Street."
Tip: You don't need to look at the screen while driving. Just listen to the voice directions. Your phone will tell you every turn.
Finding Places Nearby
Tap the search bar and type what you're looking for — "coffee shop," "grocery store," "pharmacy." Google Maps will show you what's nearby with ratings, hours, and distance. Tap any result to get directions.
If You Make a Wrong Turn
Don't panic. Google Maps automatically recalculates your route the moment you miss a turn. It will calmly say "Recalculating" and give you a new path. You don't need to start over.
One Important Setting
For Google Maps to work, your phone needs to know where you are. This is called "Location Services." If Maps ever says it can't find your location, go to Settings → Privacy → Location Services → Maps → and make sure it's set to "While Using the App."
Google Maps is one of those apps that genuinely makes life easier — whether you're driving somewhere new or just looking for the nearest pharmacy. At TTL workshops, we practice it together so you feel ready to use it on your own.
